Brewster Theater Company is holding auditions for its Winter 2010 production of James Goldman’s “The Lion in Winter.”

Here’s the announcement, with casting particulars:

“Set over Christmas of 1183, The Lion in Winter recounts Henry II’s effort to choose a worthy successor. Like many a modern-day politician, Britain’s King Henry II finds it occasionally useful to take his wife out of mothballs and parade her before the public. Henry’s Queen Eleanor, long exiled to a faraway castle, is “invited” to join Henry and their three sons for a family reunion. In this way, Henry hopes to maintain a stronghold on his Empire and to prevent the balance of power from shifting to Eleanor or to one of his sons: Richard the Lion-Hearted, Prince Geoffrey, or Prince John. Also on hand for the get-together is Henry’s mistress Princess Alais—who covets the King’s influence—and the Princess’ brother, King Philip of France. Despite Henry’s efforts to keep his wife and offspring at arms’ length (and away from the throne), Eleanor successfully reunites the brood, assuring that her power will not only be restored, but will last long after her death.

Auditions will be held Nov. 17 and 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Church, 26 Prospect St., Brewster

Director Matt Bogen is looking for the following:
1 Woman (Age 40s – 60s)
1 Woman (Age 20s)
1 Man (Age 40s – 60s)
4 Men (Ages late teens – early 40s)
Readings will be done from material provided.

The Lion in Winter is scheduled to be performed on January 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Church, 26 Prospect St., Brewster.

I posted this notice way back in June when auditions were announced, but tryouts are next week, so here it is again: BEDFORD COMMUNITY THEATRE ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER AUDITIONS FOR A CHRISTMAS CAROL (A MUSICAL)

Bedford Community Theatre will present a musical version of Charles Dickens’ beloved classic A Christmas Carol this fall with auditions for all roles in early September. Beautiful melodies by Alan Menken and poignant lyrics by Lynn Ahrens add to the emotional power and pure joy of Dickens’ timeless tale in this version originally presented at Madison Square Garden Theater.

The production includes classic roles for adults, such as Scrooge, Bob Cratchit and the ghosts; several parts for young actors (Tiny Tim, young Scrooge, his sister Fan), and a teen dance corps, as well as a multi-generational ensemble.

Auditions will be held at the Bedford Hills Community House as follows: For all adult and teen roles, auditions will be Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 4 to 9 pm . Auditions for children, age 8 and up will be Thursday, Sept. 10 from 4 p.m. to completion. Adults and teens are also welcome to audition on Thursday after 6 p.m. Performers should come prepared to sing and dressed to move. (Bring sheet music in your key. Accompanist provided.) Participants may request an audition time slot by e-mail to catetesta@hotmail.com.

A Christmas Carol, BCT’s eighth annual musical production, will be directed by Tom Kramer and produced by Diane Bradsell and Laurie Lewis. Performances of A Christmas Carol will be Nov. 20-22 and Dec. 3-6 at the Bedford Hills Community House. Tickets will go on sale in October.

For more information about auditions, including a character breakdown, details about this production and directions to the theater, visit BCT’s website at www.bedfordcommunitytheatre.org.

Bedford Community Theatre operates in cooperation with the Town of Bedford Recreation and Parks Department. A Christmas Carol is presented through special arrangement with Music Theater International.

White Plains Performing Arts Center has been on a rollercoaster ride.

This time last year, they were an Equity home to big rarely-seen musicals like “Camelot.” Somewhere along the way, they jettisoned Toni Rubio, who had run a great youth theater program there.

Now, the Equity theater is reeling in the wake of the economic crash. The last show of the second season was canceled and they have yet to announce plans for season three, at a time when they should be casting the season’s first show.

But they’ve hired Jeremy Quinn, late of several youth theaters—Westchester Broadway and Helen Hayes among them—to reimagine Rubio’s Renaissance Theater Academy.

He has come up with the Westchester Conservatory for the Performing Arts and is now casting Elton John and Time Rice’s “AIDA.”

Here’s a note from Quinn:

“If you have not yet made an appointment to audition for AIDA and are still interested, there are some slots still available on both Sept. 12 and 13 from 4-7 p.m. Callbacks are Sept. 14, from 6-9 p.m.

“We are seeking a large cast of strong, multi-ethnic singer/actors from age 13 on up. There is no fee to audition, but if you are cast, you will be required to pay the tuition for the program if you accept your role. (Tuition is $350 if you sign up for an audition by Friday, Sept. 4, and $375 if you sign up after that.)

“REHEARSALS: Tuesdays (4-8 pm), Thursdays (4-8 pm) & Sundays (12-6 pm)

“A more specific rehearsal schedule will be made after rehearsals begin. Not everyone will be called for every rehearsal.

“To make an audition appointment or for more information, please call 914-328-1600 ext. 16 or email education@wppac.com.

Quinn directs “AIDA,“ with musical direction by George Croom and choreography by Linda Duci.

Performances will be Nov. 13 and 14 at 8 p.m.

This morning was deliciously cool in the suburbs, a sure sign that the fall awaits. Here’s another: groups are starting to audition for their fall plays. YCP TheaterWorks will present Charles Busch’s “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife Nov. 7 through 15. But first director Marshall Moseley has to find a cast.

To that end, here’s the audition notice:

“YCP TheaterWorks will hold open auditions for ‘The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife’ on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 8 & 9, 7:30 p.m., at Van Cortlandtville School, Route 6, Mohegan Lake, directly opposite Cortlandt Town Center Shopping Mall. Performances will be Nov. 7 through 15.

There are roles for 2 men and 3 women
Ira, the allergist, age 50s

Mohammed, the doorman, age 20s

Marjorie, the allergist’s wife, age 50s

Lee, her childhood friend, age 50s

Frieda, Marjorie’s mother, age 80s.

(Don’t let these suggested ages of the roles deter; actors often play older or younger than their actual ages.)

A copy of the script will be on reserve at the reference desk of the Hart Library, Main St., Shrub Oak, for perusal within the library. For further information, call Marshall Moseley, the director: 914-528-4145 or e-mail ycptw@bestweb.net

The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife might sound like a part of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, but that’s not quite so. An award winning hit at the Manhattan Theatre Club and on Broadway in 2000, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife written by Charles Busch is a radical departure for the well known author of extravagant spoofs like Vampire Lesbians of Sodom and Psycho Beach Party.

Marjorie Taub, the wife of a philanthropic allergist, is engulfed in a life crisis of Medea like proportions. Her children are grown, her beloved therapist died recently and her mother, obsessed with bowel movements grates on her nerves.

She tries to lose herself in a world of art galleries, foreign films and avant guard theater, but finds she is barely able to rouse herself from her sofa. Her spirits suddenly soar when a fascinating and incredibly worldly friend from her childhood appears on her doorstep.

But soon, Lee the savior who infuses Marjorie with life becomes Lee the unwelcome and sinister guest.

Jason Summers, a talented director of all things musical, dropped me a line today, about auditions he’s holding for “Grease,” a production of the cancer-fighting HOPE Players at Kennedy Catholic High School.

Here’s his announcement:

“Dear Potential Hope Players,

“Do you still find yourself longing for those summer nights? Were you born to hand jive? Do you go together like rama lama lama ke ding a de dinga a dong?

“Even if you’re a beauty school dropout, you’re the one that we want!

“The Hope Players is pleased to announce Auditions for its eleventh summer extravaganza, Grease, on Monday, June 22, starting at 3 p.m. at Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers, NY 10589. Callbacks will be the following day, also at 3 p.m. Auditions are open to all high school and college performers.

Show dates are Aug. 7-9.

“Best of all, everything the Hope Players raise from Grease will go toward local breast cancer research and awareness efforts. So why not do a good thing this summer?

“Audition for Grease on June 22 and become hopelessly devoted to Hope!

We are changing up the audition process a little. In an effort to be organized and more time-conscience, we are going to break the auditions into THREE TIME SLOTS for everyone. This will require those who are interested in auditioning to email in a “audition reservation request” to bwayjay@hotmail.com or thehopeplayers@aol.com. The time slots are as follows:

3:00 PM to 4:10PM FILLED
4:15PM to 5:25PM
5:30PM to 7:00PM

Therefore, if you need to get out early or know you will be running late, you have the ability to plan.

So please REPLY TO THIS EMAIL to request a spot by FRIDAY, JUNE 19. Make sure you put a first and second choice. Then check your email June 20 to see what spot you have. If you don’t have a preference, please write back and let us know that. Please forward this email to those who are new to Hope and you know may be auditioning.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN STAGE CREW – do not come to auditions. Please send an email to thehopeplayers@aol.com expressing interest in stage crew, what you would like to be considered for, and experience you’ve had.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on June 22!

For auditions, please bring dancing shoes and prepare 16 bars of music. The music can be either from GREASE or similar shows.
