There’s something exciting about opening night, but things at Ossining High School were a bit extra special tonight, as “Legally Blonde: The Musical” marks the opening of a beautifully restored theater.
There’s a professional lighting booth, new seats, a new main curtain, new wiring and lights, a revived balcony and new carpeting and cool running lights up each aisle.
It’s still got that “new theater” smell and is a gem of a space, the perfect setting for a fun and bouncy musical, which is just what director Jessica Beattie has ordered up.
“Legally Blonde,” based on the Reese Witherspoon film, tells the fish-out-of-water story of Malibu blonde Elle Woods who follows her true love to Harvard Law, with comic results.
The new auditorium seats 746, says Ossining’s arts poobah Bradley Morrison, but they’ve taken some seats out to accommodate set pieces on the auditorium floor, one of which is a mobile home.
Don’t worry about them jacking up ticket prices to pay for it all. Ossining still has the best bargain in high-school musicals: All seats are free. Even the nice, brand-new ones.
“Legally Blonde,” at Ossining High School, 7 p.m., April 3, 4 and 5.
Here’s the Running Lines video I shot at Ossining. Enjoy!
