The last moments of last year’s high-school-musical season saw Archbishop Stepinac High School’s production of “Phantom of the Opera” win the award for outstanding overall production at the 14th annual Metropolitan High School Theatre Awards at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill. Of the 63 musicals planned between February and May, there aren’t a lot of repeats, meaning if you want to see a particular show, other than those listed below, you’ll only have one shot.
Four schools will perform “The Wiz,” making it the most-popular choice of 2013.
Three schools will perform “Crazy for You,” “Footloose,” “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” and “The Music Man.”
Two schools will perform “Little Shop of Horrors” and “West Side Story.”
The busiest weekends for musicals are March 7-9, when nine musicals will open, and March 14-17, when a whopping 16 shows will open.
Other popular weekends: April 11-14 (7 shows open); April 25-28 (7 shows open); and April 18-21 (8 shows open).
Check out The Journal News on Sunday for a show-by-show schedule and a look at new faces in the directorial ranks in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.
We’ll also have a story about the 15th Annual Metropolitan High School Theater Awards, which are, as of this writing, homeless, thanks to the demise of Peekskill’s Paramount Center for the Arts. Producer Danielle Rudess discusses the options facing the awards show, the loudest, proudest moment in high-school theater held each June.
A bit of news to report today: Last year’s winner of the best overall production, Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, announced today that they’ll follow up last year’s “Phantom of the Opera” with another musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, “Evita,” which closes on Broadway tomorrow night.
