Updated: An earlier post reported the airing date of tomorrow. Then NBC moved the airing to Friday.
Set your DVRs for the “Today” Friday morning to catch the Brewster High School band taking part in a surprise wedding proposal.
Band director George Viglucci tells me the event was filmed in mid-September, when “Today” show producers called and asked the perennial St. Patrick’s Day Parade participants to help an ex-Marine pop the question to his fiancée, also an ex-Marine, on the U.S.S. Intrepid.
“He told her they were just touring the Intrepid and we were the marching band on the flight deck,” Viglucci says. “After a while, he excused himself and she stayed and watched us. He changed into a tuxedo and when he came back, the band parted and he came through and asked her to marry him. And the band held up banners that spelled out ‘Marry Me.’”
On the set list that day was a Michael Jackson medley from the marching band’s field show, including “Thriller” and an old Jackson Five number called “Dancing Machine.” After the bride-to-be said yes, the band played “I’ll be There.”
(I guess if she said no, they could have played Jackson’s “Beat It,” but that wasn’t needed.)
The segment airs Friday on the “Today” show, Channel 4.
