It would seem like the summer of star-crossed lovers.
Shakespeare on the Sound is staging “Romeo & Juliet,” as is Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, in a production directed by Christopher V. Edwards.
At Hudson Valley, Edwards has the benefit of a seasoned Romeo: Carl Howell played the Montague for much of the spring in a touring company the festival dispatched to schools across the region. Of course, the script they used for those one-hour shows was greatly condensed by director Ryan Quinn, who plays Friar Lawrence in Edwards’ full-length production.
Still Romeo is Romeo and Howell says the tour has strengthened his grasp on the character.
His Juliet is Angela Janas, a newly minted graduate of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater Actor Training Program. At a recent rehearsal visit, the bubbly Janas fairly floated, she seemed so excited to be here. Meanwhile, her Romeo was on the road, so you won’t see him in this Running Lines video. But get to the tent. Find the playing schedule at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival website.
