Years in director’s seat: 11.
Best reason to join the musical: “It’s great camaraderie! Plus you learn a lot about yourself, emotionally and physically — like how little sleep you can function on.”
How the musical changes kids: “It gives them great confidence and brings out emotion like no other activity.”
How kids change directors: “They teach patience, kindness under stress — and how to have fun! Most of all, I am constantly amazed by their talent.”
Most memorable moment: “There are lots. But the best for me is when, after the show, kids are so excited and they hug you and say, ‘We did it — thanks!’ The other moments I love are when you see or hear the kids get that song or line the way it’s meant to be and they have that aha moment.”
Wish I knew it sooner: “When you direct for the first time — even if you have been an actor — you really don’t have any idea, until you are the one directing, how much work it is.”
