The changing of the guard at “Next to Normal” — the Tony- and Pulitzer-Prize-winning musical by Armonk’s Tom Kitt (composer, orchestrator) and Brian Yorkey (book, lyrics) — is under way. Tony Award nominee and White Plains native Jennifer Damiano will play her final performance as Natalie on July 18 at 7:30 p.m., it was announced today. It had been previously announced that Tony-winner Alice Ripley and two-time Tony Award nominee Brian d’Arcy James will also play their final performances on that date. Meghann Fahy will assume the role of Natalie on July 19. On that date, the company of “Next to Normal” will also include Tony nominee Marin Mazzie, Jason Danieley, Kyle Dean Massey and original cast members Adam Chanler-Berat and Louis Hobson.
Pictured is Damiano, with composer Tom Kitt, at the start of the journey during the show’s Off-Broadway run at Second Stage. I’m going to see the show again soon, to catch it at the end of this leg of its journey. Should be interesting to get Jenn’s perspective on things.
The Times is suggesting that Jenn’s next stop might be Mary Jane Watson in Julie Taymor’s “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” replacing Evan Rachel Wood, who withdrew from the megamusical. Reeve Carney is signed to play Peter Parker when “Turn Off the Dark” opens at the Hilton in the fall.
