A stunning and inexplicable omission from this morning’s nominees is Armonk’s Tom Kitt, whose orchestrations and arrangements made the Green Day musical “American Idiot” thinkable in the first place.
The 27 Tony nominators likewise failed to recognize the “Next to Normal” composer’s work on “Everyday Rapture,” Sherie Rene Scott’s twice-nominated show with songs that ranged from Mr. Rogers to Tom Waits. Did the nominators think those songs wove themselves into the musical?
Nominations for orchestrations went to Jason Carr for “La Cage,” Aaron Johnson for “Fela!”, Jonathan Tunick for “Promises, Promises,” and Daryl Waters and David Bryan for “Memphis.”
One of those things that make you go “hmmmmm,” particularly since Kitt’s work on both “American Idiot” and “Everyday Rapture” received Drama Desk nominations 24 hours earlier.
