In Ardsley, director Flori Doyle — whose production of “The Producers” was absolutely stunning last year — is readying “Urinetown,” which I wasn’t able to visit in rehearsal, but which I won’t miss on Opening Night tomorrow. Here’s a release:
“The Ardsley High School Drama Club is proud to present Mark Hollmann’s and Greg Kotis’ Urinetown the musical at 7:30pm on March 18th, 19th, and 20th. This comedic musical breaks down the 4th wall and allows Officer Lockstock and Little Sally to share the plight of a town in the midst of a horrid drought, where water is such a scarce resource that private toilets became abolished and people must actually pay to pee in the few remaining public urinals. The water in the town is controlled by the UGC, Urine Good Company, which is led by the sinister Caldwell B. Cladwell. Amenity #9, the public toilet used in this show, is managed by the shrewd Ms. Pennywise and the young, good-hearted, idealist Bobby Strong, who falls in love with Cladwell’s daughter, Hope. She convinces him to “follow his heart” and fight for the freedom the people of the town from the harsh dictatorship. Filled with dancing cops, an array of ragged poor people, and a song about bunnies, this show aims to make every audience member think about the privileges they have right now and how impossible life would be if these amenities were suddenly taken away from us.
“Directed by Mrs. Flori Doyle, the show is stage managed by Kashvi Kumar and Elana Schlossberg. Musical direction is provided by Spencer Smith; choreography, Tricia Aronson and set design, Eric Zoback. Our accompanist, Stefano Pena, is an Ardsley Alum from the class of 2002.
