“Urinetown,”?this year’s musical at Rye Country Day School, continues the school’s long tradition of putting teachers and staff in the cast, side by side with students.
This year, “regulars” Matt Suzuki, David Tafe and Dick Pike will be joined by RCDS security officer Patrick Early in a cast directed by Dulcie Arnold.
“Urinetown,” a three-time Tony-winner in 2002, is about a time in the not-too-distant future when water shortages have led to draconian policies where people have to pay to relieve themselves.
Mark Hollmann’s award-winning score, with lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, draws from a host of classic Broadway shows, including “West Side Story” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”
A former NYPD detective, Early plays Caldwell B. Cladwell, the boss of Urine Good Company, a baddie if ever there was one.
If you’re a fan of musicals and haven’t seen the irreverent, unfortunately named “Urinetown” — in several excellent high-school productions and on the stage at Rye Country Day last summer, courtesy of the Port Chester Council of the Arts — this is one of only two chances this season. (Ardsley presents “Urinetown” March 18, 19 and 20.)
Rye Country Day is the only high-school musical this week, the first in an unbroken string of shows stretching through April.
Next weekend brings: “West Side Story” to Salesian High School in New Rochelle; “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” to Byram Hills in Armonk; “Peter Pan” to Rye Neck; “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying”?to Rye; “Once Upon a Mattress” to Nanuet and Irvington; “Anything Goes” to North Rockland; “The Music Man” to Westlake and “Oliver!” to North Salem.
