A new year brings a host of opportunities for theater lovers who want to take a more active role. Here’s a sampling of upcoming auditions across the Lower Hudson Valley:
What: Bedford Community Theater auditions for George Bernard Shaw’s play, directed by John Thompson.
When: 7 p.m., Jan. 12 and 14. Callbacks, if necessary, Jan 17.
Where: The Bedford Hills Community House, 74 Main St., Bedford Hills.
What’s it about: Barbara’s with the Salvation Army; her dad’s in munitions. Can they come to a meeting of the minds?
Performances: April 9, 10, 16, 17.
What: Fort Hill Players auditions for Eric Goble’s comedy, directed by Melinda O’Brien.
When: 7 p.m., Jan. 6 and 7.
Where: Rochambeau School, 228 Fisher Ave., White Plains.
What’s it about: A parody of our obsession with digital gadgets.

Westchester Teen Idol
What: PMT Productions auditions for Westchester Teen Idol Contest.
When: 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Jan. 9; 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Jan. 10.
Who: Open to all teens.
Where: Irvington Town Hall Theatre, 85 Main St., Irvington.
What’s it about: The top 25 contestants will compete in the final concert event on Feb. 27 at the Irvington Town Hall Theatre. A panel of celebrity judges will pick the final winner. Westchester Teen Idol 2010 will receive a large prize package including cash and prizes from area businesses.

What: Harrison Players auditions for Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias” directed by Michael Mele.
When: 7:30 p.m., Jan. 19 and 21.
Where: Veterans’ Memorial Building, 210 Halstead Ave., Harrison.
What’s it about: Ladies in a Louisiana beauty parlor. Lather, laugh, repeat. All roles open.
Performances: April 23, 24, 25.
“Into the Woods”
What: Yorktown Stage auditions for the Sondheim fairy-tale musical, directed by Greg Baccarini
Where: Youth Arts Center, 17 Gramercy Place, Thornwood.
When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 17; 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Jan. 18.
Callbacks: 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Jan. 21.
Performances (at Yorktown Stage): April 16, 17, 18.
What’s it about: Sondheim and Lapine wonder what happens after “they lived happily ever after”?
Who: Must be 17 or older, bring sheet music, resume, headshot or other photo. Prepare a musical-theater song and a brief comic monologue. No dancing required at audition.

“I Love You Because”
What: Pound Ridge Theatre Company & Acting Company of Greenwich auditions for the musical with music by Joshua Salzman, book and lyrics by Ryan Cunningham. Directed by Larry Schneider.
When: 7 p.m., Jan. 26 and 27.

Performances: April 23 through May 22
What’s it about: A modern-day musical retelling of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” with the genders reversed.
Who: Ages 20s to 40s. Bring music in your range for two contemporary musical theater songs: one belter and one ballad (you may also be asked to learn a brief dance at the audition).
