“Senior Scenes” in Rye

November
25

Next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4 and 5, Rye High School presents “Senior Scenes.” Six seniors and three juniors direct 18 underclassmen in 10-minute scenes. Performances are at 8 p.m. at the Rye High School Performing Arts Center. $10, $5 for students, senior citizens free.

Writes director Michael Limone: “The project is about the directing experience so these are all scenes from published playwrights. The directors pick their play, attend the general auditions, cast their play, and plan their production. I work with the directors on all of the challenges that a director has to deal with. I observe all the rehearsals and I meet with the directors afterward and we talk about the process—what is working for them and what is not. I mention things they may not have thought about. We talk about motivating actors, planning ahead, dealing with textual ambiguity, etc.

“One great side effect of this process is the mentoring and connection that occurs between the upperclassmen and the freshman. This is the one show each year that the freshman have priority for casting. A bond forms between directors and cast members. The process is always a joy to watch and it produces a very exciting night of theater.”
