Auditions: “AIDA” at WPPAC

September

White Plains Performing Arts Center has been on a rollercoaster ride.

This time last year, they were an Equity home to big rarely-seen musicals like “Camelot.” Somewhere along the way, they jettisoned Toni Rubio, who had run a great youth theater program there.

Now, the Equity theater is reeling in the wake of the economic crash. The last show of the second season was canceled and they have yet to announce plans for season three, at a time when they should be casting the season’s first show.

But they’ve hired Jeremy Quinn, late of several youth theaters—Westchester Broadway and Helen Hayes among them—to reimagine Rubio’s Renaissance Theater Academy.

He has come up with the Westchester Conservatory for the Performing Arts and is now casting Elton John and Time Rice’s “AIDA.”

Here’s a note from Quinn:

“If you have not yet made an appointment to audition for AIDA and are still interested, there are some slots still available on both Sept. 12 and 13 from 4-7 p.m. Callbacks are Sept. 14, from 6-9 p.m.

“We are seeking a large cast of strong, multi-ethnic singer/actors from age 13 on up. There is no fee to audition, but if you are cast, you will be required to pay the tuition for the program if you accept your role. (Tuition is $350 if you sign up for an audition by Friday, Sept. 4, and $375 if you sign up after that.)

“REHEARSALS: Tuesdays (4-8 pm), Thursdays (4-8 pm) & Sundays (12-6 pm)

“A more specific rehearsal schedule will be made after rehearsals begin. Not everyone will be called for every rehearsal.

“To make an audition appointment or for more information, please call 914-328-1600 ext. 16 or email education@wppac.com.

Quinn directs “AIDA,“ with musical direction by George Croom and choreography by Linda Duci.

Performances will be Nov. 13 and 14 at 8 p.m.
