Dance Against Drugs

August
27

Laya Rajan has a busy fall ahead.

The Yorktown High School senior runs a not-for-profit company—doesn’t EVERY high-school senior have a not-for-profit dance company?—called Dance Against Drugs (DAD, www.danceagainstdrugs.org).

On Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 3 at 7 p.m., DAD presents HOPE 2009, with original compositions that blend classical Indian dance Bharatanatyam and Odissi, with ballet, modern and flamenco, set to Camille Saint-Saens’s Carnival of the Animals and Danse Macabre.

Writes Rajan: “ In this performance, we explore the interactions between the different dance forms and demonstrate the universality of dance, and by extension, the human spirit using music that is alien to all these dance forms.  HOPE also includes pieces that study movement outside the framework of pure
dance and pieces that involve acting and even a little comedy.  The dancers are Laya Rajan, Alice Fischetti, Malinda Crump, and Erika Valero.”

But they’re not stopping there: HOPE will then make its New York City debut at the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater on Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

And it’s all for a good cause: Proceeds from these shows benefit the youth department of the Peekskill public library and the Yorktown school system’s drug prevention program.  Dance Against Drugs has previously contributed to these organizations and has partnered with the India Literacy Project. They performed at the Smithwick Theater in Mountainview, California, to raise money to educate children in developing countries.

At Yorktown Stage (1974 Commerce, Yorktown Heights), adults pay $15 , family of four is $30, seniors and students, $10. Tickets available at Field Library.

For the NYC performance, The Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater is at 405 W. 55th St. Adults $20, family of four $40.
