Auditions: Purchase College’s “Nutcracker”

It is a holiday tradition across the Lower Hudson Valley: Purchase College’s “Nutcracker.” Open auditions are coming up soon for children. Here’s a link to a story I wrote a few winters ago.

If you and yours are so inclined, here’s the information on auditions.

Boys and girls ages 5-13 are invited to audition on Saturday, Sept. 12 to perform in the Purchase College Conservatory of Dance production of Nutcracker ’09. Last year more than 200 area children participated in this popular ballet which showcases exciting choreography by the Conservatory faculty.

Auditions will be held in Studio E of the Dance building at Purchase College throughout the day according to the schedule below. The campus is located at 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase, NY.

The Purchase Dance Corps brings this traditional version of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic alive at the Purchase College Performing Arts Center from December 1-6. Nutcracker ’09 features guest artists Julie Diana and Zachary Hench, principal dancers from the Pennsylvania Ballet in the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and her cavalier, plus live music by the Purchase Symphony Orchestra. Former New York City Ballet soloist and Conservatory of Dance professor Bettijane Sills is the Artistic Director.

Children who audition should have some previous dance experience and be no taller than five feet. Dance attire or sweatpants should be worn to audition. Boys are encouraged to audition.

Casting is at the discretion of the choreographer and/or the artistic director.

A Parents Meeting will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 1-2:30 PM to announce casting decisions and discuss Nutcracker’09 policies. All parents of participating dancers are required to attend this meeting.

Rehearsals begin October 5 and will vary from one to three rehearsals per week depending on the role in which the children are cast.

The audition schedule is as follows:

Group 1 (5-6 yrs old as of Sept. 1, 2009)
Registration 9:15 AM
Audition 10 AM-11:30 AM

Group 2 (7-8 yrs old as of Sept. 1, 2009)
Registration 10:45 AM
Audition 11:30 AM-1:30 PM

Group 3 (9-10 yrs old as of Sept. 1, 2009)
Registration 1:45 PM
Audition 2:15 PM -3:45 PM

Group 4 ( 11-13 yrs of old as of Sept. 1, 2009)
Registration 3:15 PM
Audition 3:45 PM-5 PM
