NHSMTAs, Day 2: Michelle’s dispatch

June
27

Michelle Rubich of Briarcliff, reporting from Day 2 of the National High School Musical Theater Awards:

The morning started off rough, considering we were staging our opening at 9 a.m., but we finished it in in two hours, and it looks incredible!

We were split into our “solo” groups and rehearsed our 32 bars of music that each person sings at the show.

At lunch, Constantine, from American Idol and “Rock of Ages,” came to visit us. There was a huge photo-op!

He actually sat down right across the table from me, and just spoke about his career, how he started out, how he went to Boston Conservatory, how he toured, and now has had his first TONY nomination. It was great he had so much to say!

After lunch, we were split into our solo groups for which we will be singing for the judges tomorrow. I’ll be singing “Suddenly Seymour! ” We worked with two NYU professors – and boy, I learned so much about interpreting the song. It’s so much different without a ‘Seymour’, set, band, and the previous scene which makes it so much harder.

That night we saw “West Side Story”. Another huge photo-op! I cried my eyes out. =)  After the show, we met the cast and producers! They all had so much to say about the show, their training, and advice for us – “Follow your dreams”. I got back to the dorms at 11:30 and crashed!
