Losing a member of the family

It might sound trite, but when you interview someone—at least when I do—you sort of become a part of their circle. They let you into their lives, however briefly, and you join them in their orbit.
I’ve interviewed every member of Dan Foster’s family—director Dan (of Hudson Stage), his wife, Tony-nominee Liz Callaway and their son, Nick, when he was in “South Pacific” at Croton-Harmon High School. I also interviewed Ann Hampton Callaway, Liz’s sister, who also lives in Croton and welcomed me into her home to talk about her latest CD, “At Last.”
When Ann and I spoke, she remarked that her father, journalist John Callaway, used the same kind of reporter’s notebook that I scribble in. She spoke so proudly of his accomplishments, of his ability.
John Callaway died yesterday. The veteran Chicago newsman—whom William F. Buckley called the best interviewer he had ever met—was 72.
Here’s a link Dan sent me. A remarkable man, that John Callaway.
Rest in peace.
