Michael V. Ficocelli, a Rockland composer and a co-founder of Little Fig Stage Company, will have his song, “My Mamalah,” sung at a memorial service at Auschwitz/Birkenau Poland on July 2.
“I’m deeply honored by this performance,” Ficocelli said. “The song reveals a mother’s thoughts (an internal dialogue with her child) as she waits in line for the cleansing room. The song will be sung in Yiddish with Eastern European accompaniment.”
“My Mamalah” is part of a larger choral work entitled “From Death To Hope” originally commissioned by Temple Sharey Tefilo Israel, South Orange, NJ. “From Death To Hope” was later produced by the Center for Holocaust Studies at Ramapo College and performed at the Sharp Theatre at Ramapo College, Mahwah, NJ.
Both performances were directed by Marci Elyn Schein, Ficocelli’s wife, who will accompany him to Auschwitz to hear “My Mamalah” performed.
