Tricks, treats on local stages

October
31

Today is Halloween and there are treats – and a couple of tricks – on local stages.

Briarcliff’s Hudson Stage kicks off its 10th anniversary season with “Mary’s Wedding,” a two-character dream play set in Canada in World War I. It’s sweet and unabashedly sentimental, but it also requires a thinking audience to fill in the blanks. If it were candy bar, it’d be a Charleston Chew. 914-271-2811.

PMT Productions returns to its Pleasantville roots with Stephen Schwartz’s lovely little musical, “The Baker’s Wife,” about French villagers who love their bread more than they love their neighbors. Directed by Westchester theater icon George Puello, this would have to be a Twix bar, since the cookie inside has to be baked. 914-428-8446.

Penguin Rep in Stony Point closes up the wonderful thriller “The Woman in Black” this weekend, as close to a perfect piece of theater as you’ll find. Again, this one really makes you think and it comes at you from all angles. If it were a candy bar, it’d be a Chunky bar. 845-786-2873.

In Palisades, The Children’s Shakespeare Theater opens “All’s Well That Ends Well” – a tale of love, denial, war and eventually, peace – for a two-weekend run. Director Diana Green does it in Baroque style, with music of the day and high, white wigs. It’s not really a candy, but considering the fluffy wigs, it might be a Mallomar. 845-365-9709.

Antrim Playhouse’s “110 in the Shade” is poorly staged and directed without flair. If this show came to my door, it’d get a rock, just like Charlie Brown. 845-354-9503.

Irvington’s Clocktower Players present Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me, Kate,” starring husband and wife Peter and Bonnie Rofé as Fred and Lilli, and a cast that can really sing and dance. This, of course, gets a Hershey’s Kiss. 914-591-6602.

James Kiberd directs “A Perfect Ganesh” at the former Reader’s Digest property in Chappaqua, now called Chappaqua Crossing. The play involves two women on an adventure to India. Candy? Some sort of ganache. 914-831-4735.
