Theater review: “Murder in Green Meadows”

October
20

“Murder in Green Meadows” — the title tells you that there will be a body involved in this production, but be warned: Death is only a passing thing in this Illinois subdivision. Just greenmeadows.jpgwhen you think someone’s dead and gone, they’re back again in the flesh.

At Brewster Theater Company, Doug Post’s thriller is briskly directed by Kevin Cannon and has a cast of four: Joshua Horan as Thomas Devereaux; Barbara Marks as his wife, Joan; Mallory Lidsky as neighbor Carolyn Symons; and Paul Stein as her husband, Jeff.

The pre-show warning about the loud gunshots is an understatement: This may be the loudest stage prop ever used.

Barbara Marks gets high grades for her rapid and frequent costume changes — many of them achieved in the blink of an eye during a blackout — and for delivering a nuanced character, put-upon, lonely and a bit scattered at times.

As her husband, Horan is creepy and controlling, behind a dimpled smile.

Lidsky and Stein also get kudos for making their characters believable, in service to a script that, while it has twists and turns, fails to rise to the level of poetry.

The set is well-appointed, the costumes appropriate and the lighting simple but effective. “Murder in Green Meadows” is worth the trip past the end of I-684, where the nights are darker than you might recall.

‘Murder in Green Meadows,’ a Brewster Theater Company production at the Melrose School, 120 Federal Hill Road, Brewster. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. $15, $13 for students and seniors. 845-598-1621. www.brewstertheatercompany.org
