This just in: Cuccioli as Arthur in “Camelot”

Got an email this morning that should make local Bob Cuccioli fans happy.

Jack W. Batman announced that Cuccioli, a memorable Don Quixote in last season’s “Man of La Mancha” cuccioli.jpg at White Plains Performing Arts Center, will play King Arthur in this season’s opening production, “Camelot.”

This new production of the Tony Award-winning musical will be directed by Sidney J. Burgoyne — who directed “Ragtime” at the theater last year and appeared as the priest in “La Mancha” — and will play a limited engagement from Sept. 26 – Oct. 5.

Cuccioli earned a Tony Award nomination for best actor in a musical for “Jekyll & Hyde,” a performance for which he won the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle awards.

Local audiences first got to know Cuccioli in “Phantom” at Westchester Broadway Theatre, a venue and a role to which he returned after his run in “La Mancha” last fall.

His recent theatrical credits include the Off-Broadway revival of “Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris,” “Amadeus” at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, “Guys and Dolls,” “Temporary Help,” “Lorenzaccio” and “The Sound of Music.”

“Camelot” will be what WPPAC calls a “spotlight musical,” not a full mainstage musical. It’s a concert version without scripts and with minimal sets and props. It will play a limited number of performances and is not part of the theatre’s subscription series.

Musical direction by James Bassi; set design by Michael Hotopp; costume design by T. Michael Hall; lighting by Thom Weaver and production stage manager B.J. Forman.

Tickets are $50 and $42.50. Season subscriptions for the Broadway Classics series and gift certificates are also available.

This season’s Broadway Classics (mainstage) shows are:

  • “Oliver!” directed by Luke Yankee (Nov. 20 – Dec. 14);

  • “A Little Night Music” directed by Sidney J. Burgoyne (March 5 -22); and

  • “Hello Dolly!” directed by Jack W. Batman (April 30 – May 17).

White Plains Performing Arts Center is located on the third level of City Center at the corner of Main and Mamaroneck in downtown White Plains. For tickets, call 914-328-1600 or buy them online at www.wppac.com.
